Mwingi West MP, Hon. Charles Ngusya Nguna, is walking a political tightrope following his controversial move to defy the Wiper Party’s directive in Parliament. The party, under the leadership of Kalonzo Musyoka, had issued clear instructions that it would not back the impeachment of Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua. However, MP Nguna, in a surprising turn, chose to support the impeachment bid, angering party loyalists.
The Wiper leadership, disappointed by what they view as Nguna’s betrayal of party unity, is now taking steps to replace the embattled MP. Reports indicate that the party is rallying behind Hon. Patrick Ngere, the current Tourism Fund Director, to step in and vie for the Mwingi West parliamentary seat in the next general election.
Hon. Patrick Ngere has gained significant political traction in Kitui County, having been a vocal figure on matters affecting both Mwingi West and the entire county. Political analysts suggest that Ngere’s growing popularity, coupled with Nguna’s perceived misstep, may position him as the frontrunner for the Wiper ticket in the next election.
MP Nguna’s move has been seen as a miscalculation, with many within the Wiper Party labeling it as disobedience and disloyalty. The Wiper “cartels,” as they are colloquially referred to, are determined to see a change in Mwingi West leadership, with Hon. Patrick Ngere emerging as their preferred candidate.
As the political tension heats up, it remains to be seen how MP Nguna will navigate the mounting pressure from his party, and whether Hon. Ngere will seize the opportunity to clinch the seat in what promises to be a fiercely contested battle for leadership in Mwingi West.
